All of us are guilty of occasionally forgetting the importance of the little things that make each day great. And on the other hand, we can also get so wrapped up in fretting about the little things that we forget to step back and appreciate the bigger picture.

As we leave behind the hectic holiday season and start into a new year, many people are writing out resolutions and goals for the 12 months ahead. I think it’s important to think about what you want out of the year to come however, I think it’s also incredibly important to take time to reflect on and appreciate the 365 days that have passed. We get so consumed with moving forward that we often forget to recognize how far we’ve come. Last year was particularly tough in many ways, but in so many others it was incredible.

One thing that I really want to focus on this new year is Gratitude. Being grateful for everything in my life – both good and bad. I want to give thanks for all the great moments and events, but also appreciate the bad times because they are what create balance. There is no sunshine without a little rain, no lotus without mud. We sometimes forget to be grateful for simply waking up in the morning. For lungs that allow us to breathe air and for the air that simply exists. These little things that make up the big picture, that we so easily take for granted.

Another one of my goals for this year is to be more present. I find that now more than ever, with a million and one things to distract us, it is so terribly easy to be elsewhere. We are constantly bombarded with advertising, social media, traditional media, news, events, and the general busy-ness of our own lives. And I, like many of us, find myself too frequently falling down the rabbit hole of social media and aimless scrolling on the internet. In my lame defense, I have been working with social media and digital marketing over the last year, however that does not excuse the exorbitant amount of time spent browsing the smartphone glued to my hand. Not only do these habits remove us from the present moment, but they also breed comparison which is a serious thief of joy. But we need to remember that nobody is posting their failures or bad days on social media – it’s all a highlight reel. I want to limit my screen time, and work my way up to one full screen-free day a week. This seems like an underwhelming goal, but with the amount of time spent and reliance on cell phones, computers & TV this will likely be much harder than it sounds.

Finally, a goal I am carrying over from last year is to be more green. I want to create a more environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyle. Last year I started to really research and turn my attention to the steps I could take to be more eco-friendly – less plastics and more reusable items, properly recycling and composting, supporting and buying local products where available. I want to carry these habits into the new year and continue to develop them. One thing I would like to dig into is sustainable fashion. Fast Fashion is not only a big environmental issue but also a social issue, as many workers behind the creation of fast fashion clothing around the world are over-worked and under-paid. Buying from thrift or second-hand shops, sharing or trading with friends, and supporting sustainable brands are all great ways to limit the fast fashion industry.

Overall I want to strive to become a better version of myself in 2019, and make a positive impact on those around me, as well as the planet we live on. Heading into the new year with an open mind, open heart and open arms. 2019 let’s see what you’ve got!
